Amex 3D Secure - Amex safekey

American Express does have 3D Secure.

SafeKey 2.0 by American Express is a security solution that uses the global industry standard EMV® 3-D Secure to detect and eliminate online fraud, adding an extra degree of security when customers shop online or in apps.

By authenticating your identity, American Express SafeKey helps prevent illegal online usage of your American Express Card.

The SafeKey box will show near the end of your checkout process when you shop online at participating SafeKey merchants. You won't have to do much most of the time. SafeKey will automatically authenticate your transaction. If American Express SafeKey deems that additional verification is required, the card association will SMS or email you a six-digit number right away. To complete your transaction, simply enter the code.

Safekey is legit.

SafeKey is American Express' version of a 3D Secure authentication solution that protects both the cardholder and the merchant from illegal Amex online transactions. Cardholders are automatically enrolled with the Amex SafeKey program and do not need to do anything further. The cardholder/purchaser may be required to enter a one-time use code that they receive by email or on their phone while making an online purchase with a participating merchant. Amex obviously has their email address and cell phone numbers, so they receive this information in a matter of seconds. These codes are only good for ten minutes. They'll have to start over if the transaction isn't completed right away.

Also, if the "legit" cardholder receives an email or text message advising them of a code they did not request, they are alerted that their card is being used fraudulently.
