The 50 stars represent the 50 states of the union, while the 13 stripes represent the 13 original states. The flag's width-to-length ratio is 10 to 19.
The District of Columbia is one of fifty (50) states. The final two states to join the Union were Alaska (49th) and Hawaii (50th) (50th). Both joined the club in 1959. Washington, D.C. is a federal district established by Congress. Local government is governed by a mayor and a 13-member municipal council.
