How does e-commerce work?

The actions and features that go into operating an eCommerce website are all described in the process flow for that website. eCommerce functions in many ways like physical retailers do, only online. There are areas that only employees can access and areas that are visible to customers.

Employee-only sections in eCommerce are similar to the management office and the area behind the registers in a physical business, with the exception that they exist on a computer rather than at a real-world location. The customer-facing sections are comparable to the sales floor, aisles, signs, and other standard retail characteristics, however, they are located online rather than inside a physical structure.

These two components are referred to in software as the backend and the frontend, including the software that powers eCommerce websites.
