PayPal suspends services in Russia over the Ukraine war. PayPal is the latest payment company to cut ties with Russia, which is now facing a slew of sanctions from the West in response to President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine.
Paypal, which had only offered cross-border transactions to Russians, will cease operations in the Russian Federation on March 6, 2022.
The payment processor declared the cessation of domestic services in Russia in 2020. This most recent action concerns PayPal’s remaining operations in the country, which include send and receive features and the ability to conduct international transactions using the PayPal Xoom remittances network.
PayPal, which only allows cross-border transactions from Russian users, had already blocked some users and some of the country’s largest banks in response to sanctions imposed by the US and other countries in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia has described the operation as a “special operation.”
Due to government restrictions, US-based credit card firms Visa, MasterCard, American Express (AXP.N), and mobile payment providers Apple Pay and Google Pay have blacklisted various Russian financial institutions.
