Yes. The American Express card works in Italy and wherever the American Express logo is displayed. Although credit and debit cards are becoming more widely used across Italy and are an increasingly convenient way to pay for things, American Express is not the preferred payment method.
Because the fees Amex charges vendors are higher than other credit cards, use it where possible, but keep another credit card(s) on hand. It is never a good idea to travel with only one credit or debit card.
To apply for an American Express credit card in Italy, you must:
- be of legal age and resident of Italy
- have a bank account
- present a valid identity document (identity card, passport, or driving license) and the tax code or health card
In addition to these basic requirements, which apply for all types of Amex cards, there is one more: the applicant's minimum gross annual income requirement, which is EUR 45,000 for the Carta Platino and EUR 25,000 for the Carta Oro. One must have a RAL of at least EUR 11,000 to apply for the Green, Blue, PAYBACK, and Explora Cards.
