What are American Express (Amex) membership reward points?

Membership Rewards is a loyalty program in which you can earn points by using your eligible American Express Card. On all eligible purchases, you'll typically earn at least 1 point for every dollar spent, but different cards offer different ways to increase your point-earning potential.

For instance, the American Express® Green Card offers 3X points on qualifying transit purchases, whereas the American Express® Gold Card offers 4 points per dollar spent on restaurant purchases.

There is no cap on the number of Membership Rewards points you can accumulate. Additionally, as long as you maintain an active Card Member status and your account is in good standing, your points will always be valid and available for redemption.

How to Earn American Express Membership Rewards Points

Every time you use your card to make an eligible purchase, you'll automatically earn Membership Rewards points if you signed up for the program. Transactions such as cash advance payments or inter-individual payments are generally not eligible.

American Express provides numerous opportunities to earn points and increase your likelihood of doing so, including:

• Welcome bonus: Some cards offer a welcome benefit that increases initial points if you spend a certain amount of money within the first few months of your card membership. The welcome proposal tends to change over time.

• Category multipliers. Cards typically offer a base-level reward of 1 point per dollar, but most cards also have rewards for certain categories, such as meals, groceries, refueling, or travel. For example, The Platinum Card® offers 5x points for flights booked directly through airlines or American Express Travel for up to $500,000. These accelerators can help you increase your points if you choose a card that fits your consumption style.

• Enroll in Amex Offers. AMEX Offers is a program that allows eligible retailers, restaurants, and services to earn additional rewards (points, mileage, cashback, etc.) depending on your card when making specific purchases. To view the current list of AMEX benefits, you can log in to your account or receive emails from AMEX. The AMEX event is available to all consumers and corporate American Express card members, but you must register for the event you wish to receive.
