What are the requirements for an American Express (AMEX) black card?

American Express's Black Card is a high-end, exclusive charge card available in personal and business versions. The physical card is made of anodized titanium and weighs about 14 grams (half an ounce), about the same as a compact disc.

Although there is no surefire way to get invited to the Centurion card club, there are some "soft" requirements you can meet to increase your chances of approval. Here are some requirements for an American Express Black Card to consider:

Be an Existing Amex Cardholder in Good Standing

In general, the absolute minimum history you must have with Amex is one year, so even if you spend a lot on Chase cards or Capital One credit cards, you'll need to "get your foot in the door" with a card like the Amex Platinum card or the Amex Business Platinum card.

Make at Least $250,000 in Purchases on Your Amex Cards

Amex does not post spending thresholds to receive invitations, but it is a rule of thumb that all Amex cards must have an annual amount of at least $250,000.

For example, if you spend $150,000 on an Amex Platinum card per year and $200,000 on an American Express® Gold card, the total expenditure on both cards would be approximately $350,000.

In effect, spending $250,000 a year does not guarantee a position. Your spending requirements also vary depending on the card product you need.

For example, a Centurion card allegedly requires an annual expenditure of approximately $250,000 to $350,000, while an American Express Business Centurion® card requires an annual expenditure of $400,000 to $500,000.

Request an Invite

You may not be actively invited to a club dedicated to Centurion cards, even if you meet your expenditure and relationship requirements.

Fortunately, you can now request an invitation! Follow these steps to request an invitation.

1. Visit the Centurion Card Portal
2. Are you interested in Centurion® membership at the bottom of the form? Click the button. Click Here.
3. You will be redirected to a short format. Enter your name, Amex card number, and the 4-digit security code that accompanies your Amex card.
4. Click Submit

It is important to note that meeting these requirements does not guarantee approval for the American Express Black Card. The card is offered on an invitation-only basis, and American Express has the final say in determining who is approved for the card.
