What is an American Express (AMEX) Black Card?

People believe the exclusive AMEX Black Card is a charge card only available by invitation for most frequent spenders. It is made of anodized titanium and features a distinctive black color.

The legend of the AMEX Black Card began in the 1980s. However, AMEX decided to act on the rumors and open one in 1999. A titanium version of it became famous in 2004 for triggering metal detectors in airports. The 'plunk factor,' the sound it made when casually dropped on the table due to its weight and texture, also spread quickly.

Since then, the Black Card has taken on a life of its own, becoming a status symbol in pop culture, with James Bond flashing a Centurion Card in Quantum of Solace and Kanye West rapping about using a Black Card.

Black cards come in two varieties: Personal Black Cards and Business Cards. It may be easier to obtain a Business Card. Like other corporate cards from American Express, it will appear on your credit report rather than the company.

The Invitation

Getting an invitation is usually determined by many factors. Member agreement on the web page provides no information on how people qualify for an invitation. But reports claim you must use your card for a few hundred thousand dollars to around $1 million per year to be invited. Estimates of the minimum annual income also vary greatly.

Membership fee

The annual fee for the Black Card is the highest of any credit card on the market. For the privilege of having a Black Card, you must pay a $10,000 one-time initiation fee with a $5,000 annual fee. Adding additional cardholders costs an additional $2,500 per year.
