Types of American Express (AMEX) cards are charge cards, credit cards, or prepaid cards issued by American Express, a publicly traded financial services company.

American Express credit cards and prepaid debit cards are available to a wide range of retail and commercial customers. It is also the industry's leading prepaid card provider, offering monthly credit with the card balance due each month.

American Express charges and credit cards are subject to standard underwriting procedures. The company seeks borrowers with good-to-high-credit quality—a credit score of at least 670—and is not generally a subprime lender.

American Express credit and charge cards offer a variety of rewards points and travel perks, which vary depending on the annual fee charged. American Express also provides a wide range of branded prepaid debit cards that can serve as gift cards or special-purpose reloadable payment cards.

The annual fee for the Blue Cash Preferred Card is $95; for the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card, it is $99; the Green Card has an annual fee of $150; the Gold Card has a fee of $250; and that of the Platinum Card is $550. However, there are no spending limits on the Green, Gold, and Platinum cards. American Express does offer at least six no-fee cards.
